Active Voice For Transitive Verbs

Conversion of Active Voice Sentence into Passive Voice For Transitive Verbs:

Rule used to identify that the sentence is in Active Voice form with transitive verb is:

Subject + was/were + third form of verb + object.

The verb in the transitive passive voice always has is, am, are, was, were, be, being or been as an auxiliary or helping verb. Transitive active sentences can be changed to tansitive, passive sentences by making the direct object the subject and putting the subject either in a prepositional phrase or omitting it.

For Example :

  • A bull dog was given to her. ( passive )
  • 'A bull dog' is subject and also third person singular so helping verb was is used ,'given' is the third form of verb give and  'to her' is an object.

While converting into Passive Voice the rule will be :

Subject + second form of verb + object.

The object 'her' will become 'subject' and the subject 'a bull dog' will become an object.the third form of verb will be used. So example is like this.

  •  Someone gave her a bull dog. ( active )
